Posthuman Signals: Plant – Human – Machine Co-Regulation

1. Project Overview

The project explores a posthuman relational system where a living plant, a human body, and a machine co-exist and co-regulate through physiological signals rather than commands.

A real plant is monitored through soil humidity sensors and bioelectrical micro-variations (Pocket Scion).

These signals control an air pump that inflates a transparent soft-robotic flower made of silicone.

A human participant enters the system through a heartbeat sensor, modulating the system without taking control.

The interaction is not immediate or reactive:

behavior emerges from negotiation between different temporalities and agencies.

2. Scientific Grounding: Plant Signals

The project is grounded in plant physiology and plant neurobiology, particularly research showing that plants:

The project focuses on two types of plant signals that are biologically real and experimentally observable:

Soil Humidity

Humidity is treated as a physiological state, not a trigger.
